- Turkiye manufacturing shows mild improvement in December
< Back Turkiye manufacturing shows mild improvement in December 3 Jan 2025 Previous Next The Istanbul Chamber of Industry Turkiye Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) increased to 49.1 in December, up from 48.3 in November, indicating a slight moderation in the manufacturing sector's health, which was the mildest decline in eight months. The Turkish manufacturing sector moved closer to stabilisation in December due to the slower declines observed in output, new orders, purchasing activity, and inventories. However, employment fell again after a rise in November. Input costs rose significantly, but output price inflation slowed to its weakest pace in more than five years, S&P Global said in a press release. Production was scaled back only marginally and to the least extent in the current nine-month sequence of slower output, amid some signs of demand improving. New orders continued to moderate overall, however, as demand remained subdued.Although still solid, the latest easing of new business was the least marked since last April. Similarly, new export orders also moderated to a lesser extent at the end of the year. With new order inflows remaining muted, manufacturers scaled back their purchasing activity, inventory holdings and employment, the last of which easing following a rise in November. In all cases, however, rates of slowdown were only marginal, the release added. Input costs increased at a marked pace in December, linked to higher raw material prices and weakness of the lira against the US dollar. The pace of inflation was a three-month high but much weaker than the average for 2024. Meanwhile, the pace of output price inflation was only slight, having eased to the weakest in just over five years. While some firms increased charges in response to higher raw material costs, others offered discounts to customers as part of efforts to secure sales. “The final set of PMI data for Turkiye in 2024 provided plenty of hope for the sector in 2025. While business conditions continued to moderate, the latest slowdown was only marginal as signs of improvement were seen in a range of variables across the survey. If this momentum can be built on at the start of 2025, we could see the sector return to growth,” said Andrew Harker, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence . “The prospects for the sector should be helped by a much more benign inflationary environment than has been the case in recent years. Output prices rose only slightly in December, and to the least extent in just over five years.”
- Records broken, QB return to Minnesota ends in heavy defeat, Chiefs’ ‘doink for the division’ kick: NFL Week 14 Sunday review | Timesforesight
< Back Records broken, QB return to Minnesota ends in heavy defeat, Chiefs’ ‘doink for the division’ kick: NFL Week 14 Sunday review 10 Dec 2024 It was a memorable Sunday of NFL action in Week 14 with multiple players across the league hitting record-breaking marks. There were also losses for some of those returning to familiar places and a last-second victory for the reigning Super Bowl champions. Sunday also saw arguably the game of the season with the Los Angeles Rams beating the Buffalo Bills in this campaign’s highest scoring contest so far Justin Jefferson reaches historic mark as Kirk Cousins’ return to Minnesota ends in heavy defeat Justin Jefferson hit a historic mark during the Minnesota Vikings’ big victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday as Kirk Cousins’ return to U.S. Bank Stadium went sourly. Jefferson had 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings won 42-21 to improve to 11-2, handing the Falcons their fourth straight defeat. Thanks to his big outing, Jefferson surpassed 7,000 career receiving yards and became the first player in NFL history to reach the milestone within his first five seasons in the league. The historic achievement highlights Jefferson’s impact since entering the league in 2020, although his two-score performance did end a run of six weeks without a touchdown for the 25-year-old. Second-year receiver Jordan Addison led the scoring for Minnesota, finishing with 133 yards and three touchdowns off eight receptions. As a result, Jefferson and Addison are the second duo in Vikings history to each have at least 100 yards and two touchdowns receiving in the same game and just the fifth duo to have 130-plus receiving yards and two-plus receiving touchdowns in a game during the Super Bowl era. The pair of star wide receivers made life easier for quarterback Sam Darnold, who threw for 347 passing yards and five touchdowns, while running back Aaron Jones rushed for another score. Afterwards, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke about the improvement he’s seen from Darnold this year, in particular after the team’s narrow win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10 when the 27-year-old threw three interceptions. “I think there can be incredible growth in moments where maybe on the outside, it seemed leaving Jacksonville like there’s something really wrong,” O’Connell told reporters. “They didn’t score a touchdown. “What it was, in my opinion, was an incredible growth moment for him to just come back the next week and start stacking some things that are leading into a layered kind of success type approach, which is what happened to a lot of quarterbacks in this league, especially the ones that their trajectory over the course of a season or their career is pointing sky-high.” While the Vikings offense warmed up as the game progressed, their defense put the clamps on Falcons quarterback Cousins, who was playing in Minnesota for the first time since leaving in the offseason. Cousins – who spent six seasons in Minnesota before moving to Atlanta – threw two interceptions, including a brilliant one-handed catch from Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy, as his mid-season slump continued and the Falcons’ winless run went on. Atlanta trailed by a point midway through the third quarter before Minnesota’s offensive explosion and Cousins’ turnovers halted any hopes of a Falcons victory on the road. Cousins said afterwards that he believes the Falcons have the ability to get their season back on track. “I think you just play your schedule and you begin to feel like it’s a week-to-week league,” the 36-year-old told reporters. “When you are playing well, you usually aren’t as good as people are telling you when they’re patting you on the back, and if you are in a rut, you’re usually not as bad as people kind of leaving you for dead. “The reality is usually somewhere in the middle. We just have to keep playing and see where the dust settles when we get to January.” Other records broken across league Outside of Jefferson’s historic mark, there were several other noteworthy records broken across Sunday’s games. In what was a largely underwhelming defeat for the Las Vegas Raiders at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there was a moment to celebrate for rookie tight end Brock Bowers as he set a new record for the most receptions by a tight end in their first season in the NFL. Bowers’ third catch of the 28-13 loss was his 87th this season, taking him past the previous record of 86 set by Sam LaPorta of the Detroit Lions set last year. While the 2024 season has been a largely forgettable one for the Raiders, Bowers has offered a ray of optimism. The 21-year-old leads the NFL in receptions and, if that pace continues, would become the first ever rookie tight end to achieve that feat at the end of the season. At his current rate, he is also on track to become the third rookie tight end to surpass 1,000 receiving yards after Kyle Pitts in 2021 and Mike Ditka in 1961. Bowers was taken by the Raiders with the No. 13 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Nathan Ray Seebeck/USA TODAY Sports/Reuters Elsewhere, Saquon Barkley’s outstanding debut season in Philadelphia saw him reach another milestone as he broke the Eagles’ single-season rushing record during their narrow victory over the Carolina Panthers. The 27-year-old had 124 yards in the 22-16 win, meaning he now has 1,623 yards on the ground this season to take him past LeSean McCoy’s previous record of 1,607 set in 2013. “I think it’s pretty cool, the most important thing was getting a win, and we got the win,” Barkley said afterwards. “Being a fan of Shady (McCoy) growing up and seeing the spectacular things he was able to do with the ball in his hands and to be mentioned with him definitely means a lot. “Gotta give credit to the guys up front. They’ve made my job a lot easier so far this year. Hopefully, it will continue.” Barkley’s big game was vital in the Eagles’ winning their ninth game in a row, although Carolina could have snatched a late victory if rookie receiver Xavier Legette hadn’t dropped a pass in the final seconds of the game at Lincoln Financial Field. Barkley (center) leads the league in rushing through Week 14. Matt Slocum/AP Chiefs use ‘doink for the division’ field goal to beat Chargers Like many of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 12 wins this season, Sunday’s victory over the Los Angeles Chargers wasn’t a classic. But at the end, they once against found a way to win. After a tight affair at Arrowhead Stadium, a 31-yard field goal as time expired from Matthew Wright bounced off the upright and through the goalposts to give the Chiefs a 19-17 victory. The so-called “Doink for the Division” kick from Wright – who had been signed earlier in the week – clinched the AFC West division for the reigning Super Bowl champions as they improved to 12-1. “I’m just glad it went in,” Wright said during a postgame interview on NBC. “I wish it went right down the middle, but three is three.” It is the ninth year in a row that Kansas City has won the division, the second longest run ever of consecutive division victories behind the 11-year run from the New England Patriots during Bill Belichick and Tom Brady’s time with the team. Wright (No. 49) kicked the game-winning field goal to beat the Chargers. Jay Biggerstaff/USA TODAY Sports/Reuters The game-winning kick from Wright was his fourth field goal of the game against the Chargers and capped off another tight win for the Chiefs. The first half saw a combined eight punts for the two teams with the Chiefs leading 13-0 at the break. Two touchdowns in the third quarter – a three-yard run from Gus Edwards and four-yard reception from Quentin Johnston – closed the gap. A 37-yard field goal from Cameron Dicker gave the Chargers a one-point lead with 4:35 remaining. But as has become tradition, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs were able to manufacture a drive and worked the remainder of the clock to set up Wright to win the game. The Chiefs are now 10-0 this season in one-possession games. “We keep the ratings, baby. Keep the ratings,” defensive lineman Chris Jones said. “Getting prepared for later on in the playoffs when every game is going to be tight. Every game is going to be similar atmosphere to this. Very tight, very close. Maybe come down to a field goal to win the game and we know how to close.” Between their victory and the Bills’ loss to the Rams earlier in the day, the Chiefs now hold a two-game lead atop the AFC conference and lead the race for the No. 1 seed and the first-round bye that comes with it. “We won the division, it’s the first step,” Mahomes told NBC afterwards. “We’ve got a lot more goals that we want to go for.” Full Week 14 Sunday results Away vs. home (winners in bold) New York Jets 26-32 OT Miami Dolphins Atlanta Falcons 21-42 Minnesota Vikings New Orleans Saints 14-11 New York Giants Carolina Panthers 16-22 Philadelphia Eagles Cleveland Browns 14-27 Pittsburgh Steelers Las Vegas Raiders 13-28 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Jacksonville Jaguars 10-6 Tennessee Titans Seattle Seahawks 30-18 Arizona Cardinals Buffalo Bills 42-44 Los Angeles Rams Chicago Bears 13-38 San Francisco 49ers Los Angeles Chargers 17-19 Kansas City Chiefs Previous Next
- Trump Says He Can't Guarantee Tariffs Won't Raise U.S. Prices
< Back Trump Says He Can't Guarantee Tariffs Won't Raise U.S. Prices He has threatened to impose tariffs on goods imported from Mexico, Canada and China. Previous Next WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump said he can't guarantee that his promised tariffs on key U.S. foreign trade partners won't raise prices for American consumers and he suggested once more that some political rivals and federal officials who pursued legal cases against him should be imprisoned. The president-elect, in a wide-ranging interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" that aired Sunday, also touched on monetary policy, immigration, abortion and health care, and U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere.Trump often mixed declarative statements with caveats, at one point cautioning "things do change." A look at some of the issues covered: Trump hems on whether trade penalties could raise prices Trump has threatened broad trade penalties, but said he didn't believe economists' predictions that added costs on those imported goods for American companies would lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers. He stopped short of a pledge that U.S. households won't be paying more as they shop. "I can't guarantee anything. I can't guarantee tomorrow," Trump said, seeming to open the door to accepting the reality of how import levies typically work as goods reach the retail market. That's a different approach from Trump's typical speeches throughout the 2024 campaign, when he framed his election as a sure way to curb inflation. In the interview, Trump defended tariffs generally, saying they are "going to make us rich." He has pledged that, on his first day in office in January, he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada unless those countries satisfactorily stop illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. He also has threatened additional tariffs on China to help force that country to crack down on fentanyl production. "All I want to do is I want to have a level, fast, but fair playing field," Trump said. Trump suggests retribution for his opponents while claiming no interest in vengeance He offered conflicting statements on how he would approach the justice system after winning election despite being convicted of 34 felonies in a New York state court and being indicted in other cases for his handling of national security secrets and efforts to overturn his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. "Honestly, they should go to jail," Trump said of members of Congress who investigated the Capitol riot by his supporters who wanted him to remain in power. The president-elect underscored his contention that he can use the justice system against others, including special prosecutor Jack Smith, who led the case on Trump's role in the siege on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump confirmed his plan to pardon supporters who were convicted for their roles in the riot, saying he would take that action on his first day in office. As for the idea of revenge driving potential prosecutions, Trump said: "I have the absolute right. I'm the chief law enforcement officer, you do know that. I'm the president. But I'm not interested in that." At the same time, Trump singled out lawmakers on a special House committee who had investigated the insurrection, citing Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. "Cheney was behind it ... so was Bennie Thompson and everybody on that committee," Trump said. Asked specifically whether he would direct his administration to pursue cases, he said, "No," and suggested he did not expect the FBI to quickly undertake investigations into his political enemies. But at another point, Trump said he would leave the matter up to Pam Bondi, his pick as attorney general. "I want her to do what she wants to do," he said. Such threats, regardless of Trump's inconsistencies, have been taken seriously enough by many top Democrats that Biden is considering issuing blanket, preemptive pardons to protect key members of his outgoing administration. Trump did seemingly back off his campaign rhetoric calling for Biden to be investigated, saying, "I'm not looking to go back into the past." Swift action on immigration is coming Trump repeatedly mentioned his promises to seal the U.S.-Mexico border and deport millions of people who are in the U.S. illegally through a mass deportation program. "I think you have to do it," he said. He suggested he would try to use executive action to end "birthright" citizenship under which people born in the U.S. are considered citizens — although such protections are spelled out in the Constitution. Asked specifically about the future for people who were brought into the country illegally as children and have been shielded from deportation in recent years, Trump said, "I want to work something out," indicating he might seek a solution with Congress. But Trump also said he does not "want to be breaking up families" of mixed legal status, "so the only way you don't break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back." Trump commits to NATO, with conditions, and waffles on Putin and Ukraine Long a critic of NATO members for not spending more on their own defense, Trump said he "absolutely" would remain in the alliance "if they pay their bills." Pressed on whether he would withdraw if he were dissatisfied with allies' commitments, Trump said he wants the U.S. treated "fairly" on trade and defense. He waffled on a NATO priority of containing Russia and President Vladimir Putin. Trump suggested Ukraine should prepare for less U.S. aid in its defense against Putin's invasion. "Possibly. Yeah, probably. Sure," Trump said of reducing Ukraine assistance from Washington. Separately, Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire. Asked about Putin, Trump said initially that he has not talked to the Russian leader since Election Day last month, but then hedged: "I haven't spoken to him recently." Trump said when pressed, adding that he did not want to "impede the negotiation." Trump says Powell is safe at the Fed, but not Wray at the FBI The president-elect said he has no intention, at least for now, of asking Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to step down before Powell's term ends in 2028. Trump said during the campaign that presidents should have more say in Fed policy, including interest rates. Trump did not offer any job assurances for FBI Director Christopher Wray, whose term is to end in 2027. Asked about Wray, Trump said: "Well, I mean, it would sort of seem pretty obvious" that if the Senate confirms Kash Patel as his pick for FBI chief, then "he's going to be taking somebody's place, right? Somebody is the man that you're talking about." Trump is absolute about Social Security, not so much on abortion and health insurance Trump promised that the government efficiency effort led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will not threaten Social Security. "We're not touching Social Security, other than we make it more efficient," he said. He added that "we're not raising ages or any of that stuff." He was not so specific about abortion or his long-promised overhaul of the Affordable Care Act. On abortion, Trump continued his inconsistencies and said he would "probably" not move to restrict access to the abortion pills that now account for a majority of pregnancy terminations, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights. But pressed on whether he would commit to that position, Trump replied, "Well, I commit. I mean, are -- things do -- things change. I think they change." Reprising a line from his Sept. 10 debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump again said he had "concepts" of a plan to substitute for the 2010 Affordable Care Act, which he called "lousy health care." He added a promise that any Trump version would maintain insurance protections for Americans with preexisting health conditions. He did not explain how such a design would be different from the status quo or how he could deliver on his desire for "better health care for less money."

TIMES FORESIGHT News & Magazine Home Magazines Conferences About Contact More More Al Fayed 'used cash gifts in bid to own directors' Mohamed Al Fayed manipulated Harrods managers to conceal his crimes, sacking those he could not control, an ex-director has told the times Jon Brilliant, who worked in Al Fayed's private office for 18 months, says the late entrepreneur plied him with envelopes full of cash - totalling about $50,000 (£39,000) - to try to compromise and control him. “He tried to own you. And ultimately, I got fired because I couldn't be bought,” he says. Harrods didn't respond to Mr Brilliant's claims. It has previously said that it was “utterly appalled” by the abuse allegations, adding that it is a “very different organisation to the one owned and controlled by Al Fayed” Mr Brilliant says he was “horrified” when he first heard the allegations that Al Fayed had abused hundreds of women and says he “beat himself up” about whether there was anything he should have questioned more. He told the BBC about surveillance, sackings, and a culture designed to keep top managers from trusting or communicating with one another. This made it harder for them to do their duty as directors to exercise independent judgement and check Al Fayed’s power - or ask questions which may have revealed more to them about how he was treating women. “I 100% can see how the management structure and culture was set up to cover it up, mask it from people,” says Mr Brilliant. Four other former directors have anonymously confirmed elements of this picture. A US citizen, Mr Brilliant was 36 when he joined the firm in August 2000. He was hired to relaunch the Harrods online business. He says that shortly before his first business trip to visit Microsoft in Seattle, Al Fayed gave him a brown envelope containing $5,000 (£3,993) in $50 notes. After the trip he tried to return the full amount. He says Al Fayed refused, asking him, “You didn't need any entertainment?” Mr Brilliant replied that he did not need it - he had been too busy to visit the cinema or theatre, and someone else had paid for dinner.

TIMES FORESIGHT News & Magazine Home Magazines Conferences About Contact More More Major Canadian news outlets sue OpenAI A coalition of Canada's biggest news outlets is suing OpenAI, the maker of artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, alleging the company is illegally using news articles to train its software. News organisations including the Toronto Star, Metroland Media, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press and CBC have all joined the suit, reportedly the first of its kind in the country. “Journalism is in the public interest. OpenAI using other companies’ journalism for their own commercial gain is not. It’s illegal,” the media organisations said in a joint statement. OpenAI says its models are "trained on publicly available data". The software is "grounded in fair use and related international copyright principles that are fair for creators and support innovation", the company said in an statement to the BBC. "We collaborate closely with news publishers, including in the display, attribution and links to their content in ChatGPT search, and offer them easy ways to opt out should they so desire." In its 84-page filing, the Canadian media coalition accuses OpenAI of ignoring safeguards like paywalls or copyright disclaimers meant to prevent the unauthorised copying of content. "OpenAI regularly breaches copyright and online terms of use by scraping large swaths of content from Canadian media to help develop its products, such as ChatGPT,” the companies said. The group, which includes the publishers of Canada's top newspapers, is seeking punitive damages of C$20,000 ($14,300; £11,000) per article they allege was used to illegally train ChatGPT - a sum that could add up to billions of dollars in compensation. The news organisations are also requesting an order that would force the company to share profits made from using their articles, as well as an injunction prohibiting OpenAI from using them in future. While the lawsuit against OpenAI is a first for Canadian publishers, it follows a similar action in the US launched by the New York Times and other publishers last year. In April, lawyers for the Times accused OpenAI of erasing evidence they needed for trial. In another case, the Authors Guild and a group of major writers including John Grisham also claimed copyright infringement. Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI was valued at C$219bn after its latest round of fundraising from investors. AI Failures Will Spike In 2025: A Call For Decentralization Innovation As we enter 2025, it's clear the AI industry is on the brink of explosive growth—but also a moment of truth. The race to dominate AI is heating up, driven by geopolitical rivalries , billions in government funding , and a relentless push for the next breakthrough. With all this exponential momentum, we have to be prudent: The abuse of AI technology in an overly centralized manner could lead to its downfall, and the integration with blockchain technology and crypto can be a trustworthy response to that

Uzbekistan has been detained over the killing of senior general Igor Kirillov and his assistant in Moscow. Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, head of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Forces, was outside a residential block early on Tuesday when an explosive device hidden in a scooter was detonated remotely. The Russian security service said the unnamed suspect was recruited by Ukrainian intelligence, according to state media agencies. In a video published by the FSB, the purported suspect - a dark-haired man wearing handcuffs with what appears to be a visible rip in his coat - speaks directly to the camera. He appears to say he was offered a reward of $100,000 and permission to move to the European Union in exchange for killing Kirillov. The FSB added that on Ukraine's instructions, he arrived in Moscow and received a homemade explosive device. He placed the explosive device on an electric scooter, which he parked at the entrance to the residential building where Kirillov lived, the FSB said. He then rented a car to monitor Kirillov's residence and installed a camera on the dashboard which livestreamed a video feed to handlers in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, the statement added. When they saw Kirillov emerge from the house, the suspect was told to press the button and detonate the bomb, the FSB said. Irina Volk, from Russia's interior ministry, said in a statement on messaging platform Telegram that the suspect had been detained in the village of Chernoye, Balashikha, in the Moscow region, before being "transferred to investigative bodies" Kirillov is thought to be the most senior military figure assassinated inside Russia since the country invaded Ukraine nearly three years ago. Alongside being charged by Ukraine, the 54-year-old had previously been sanctioned by the UK over the alleged use of chemical weapons in Ukraine. Ukraine's SBU security service has claimed Russia used chemical weapons more than 4,800 times under the general's leadership. Moscow denies this, and says it destroyed the last remainder of its vast chemical weapons stockpile in 2017. Pictures from the scene outside Kirillov's apartment block in south-eastern Moscow on Tuesday showed the badly damaged entrance, with scorch marks on the walls and a number of windows blown out. Two body bags could also be seen on the street. Also on Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Russia would raise Kirillov's assassination at the meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday. Russian officials have vowed to find and punish those involved in the killing General Motors agrees deal to enter F1 in 2026 A new team will be named after GM's Cadillac brand UK electric car production drops with firms 'under pressure' UK car production fell sharply in October amid industry concerns about "intense pressure" on investment in electric vehicle-making.
