< Back Turkiye manufacturing shows mild improvement in December 3 Jan 2025 Previous Next The Istanbul Chamber of Industry Turkiye Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) increased to 49.1 in December, up from 48.3 in November, indicating a slight moderation in the manufacturing sector's health, which was the mildest decline in eight months. The Turkish manufacturing sector moved closer to stabilisation in December due to the slower declines observed in output, new orders, purchasing activity, and inventories. However, employment fell again after a rise in November. Input costs rose significantly, but output price inflation slowed to its weakest pace in more than five years, S&P Global said in a press release. Production was scaled back only marginally and to the least extent in the current nine-month sequence of slower output, amid some signs of demand improving. New orders continued to moderate overall, however, as demand remained subdued.Although still solid, the latest easing of new business was the least marked since last April. Similarly, new export orders also moderated to a lesser extent at the end of the year. With new order inflows remaining muted, manufacturers scaled back their purchasing activity, inventory holdings and employment, the last of which easing following a rise in November. In all cases, however, rates of slowdown were only marginal, the release added. Input costs increased at a marked pace in December, linked to higher raw material prices and weakness of the lira against the US dollar. The pace of inflation was a three-month high but much weaker than the average for 2024. Meanwhile, the pace of output price inflation was only slight, having eased to the weakest in just over five years. While some firms increased charges in response to higher raw material costs, others offered discounts to customers as part of efforts to secure sales. “The final set of PMI data for Turkiye in 2024 provided plenty of hope for the sector in 2025. While business conditions continued to moderate, the latest slowdown was only marginal as signs of improvement were seen in a range of variables across the survey. If this momentum can be built on at the start of 2025, we could see the sector return to growth,” said Andrew Harker, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence . “The prospects for the sector should be helped by a much more benign inflationary environment than has been the case in recent years. Jefferson had 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings won 42-21 to improve to 11-2, handing the Falcons their fourth straight defeat. Thanks to his big outing, Jefferson surpassed 7,000 career receiving yards and became the first player in NFL history to reach the milestone within his first five seasons in the league. The historic achievement highlights Jefferson’s impact since entering the league in 2020, although his two-score performance did end a run of six weeks without a touchdown for the 25-year-old. After a tight affair at Arrowhead Stadium, a 31-yard field goal as time expired from Matthew Wright bounced off the upright and through the goalposts to give the Chiefs a 19-17 victory. The so-called “Doink for the Division” kick from Wright – who had been signed earlier in the week – clinched the AFC West division for the reigning Super Bowl champions as they improved to 12-1. “I’m just glad it went in,” Wright said during a postgame interview on NBC. “I wish it went right down the middle, but three is three.” It is the ninth year in a row that Kansas City has won the division, the second longest run ever of consecutive division victories behind the 11-year run from the New England Patriots during Bill Belichick and Tom Brady’s time with the team. Previous Next WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump said he can't guarantee that his promised tariffs on key U.S. foreign trade partners won't raise prices for American consumers and he suggested once more that some political rivals and federal officials who pursued legal cases against him should be imprisoned. The president-elect, in a wide-ranging interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" that aired Sunday, also touched on monetary policy, immigration, abortion and health care, and U.S. involvement in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere.Trump often mixed declarative statements with caveats, at one point cautioning "things do change." A look at some of the issues covered: Trump hems on whether trade penalties could raise prices Trump has threatened broad trade penalties, but said he didn't believe economists' predictions that added costs on those imported goods for American companies would lead to higher prices for U.S. consumers. He stopped short of a pledge that U.S. households won't be paying more as they shop. "I can't guarantee anything. I can't guarantee tomorrow," Trump said, seeming to open the door to accepting the reality of how import levies typically work as goods reach the retail market. That's a different approach from Trump's typical speeches throughout the 2024 campaign, when he framed his election as a sure way to curb inflation. In the interview, Trump defended tariffs generally, saying they are "going to make us rich." He has pledged that, on his first day in office in January, he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada unless those countries satisfactorily stop illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. He also has threatened additional tariffs on China to help force that country to crack down on fentanyl production. "All I want to do is I want to have a level, fast, but fair playing field," Trump said. Trump suggests retribution for his opponents while claiming no interest in vengeance He offered conflicting statements on how he would approach the justice system after winning election despite being convicted of 34 felonies in a New York state court and being indicted in other cases for his handling of national security secrets and efforts to overturn his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. "Honestly, they should go to jail," Trump said of members of Congress who investigated the Capitol riot by his supporters who wanted him to remain in power. The president-elect underscored his contention that he can use the justice system against others, including special prosecutor Jack Smith, who led the case on Trump's role in the siege on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump confirmed his plan to pardon supporters who were convicted for their roles in the riot, saying he would take that action on his first day in office. As for the idea of revenge driving potential prosecutions, Trump said: "I have the absolute right. I'm the chief law enforcement officer, you do know that. I'm the president. But I'm not interested in that." At the same time, Trump singled out lawmakers on a special House committee who had investigated the insurrection, citing Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., and former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. "Cheney was behind it ... so was Bennie Thompson and everybody on that committee," Trump said. Asked specifically whether he would direct his administration to pursue cases, he said, "No," and suggested he did not expect the FBI to quickly undertake investigations into his political enemies. But at another point, Trump said he would leave the matter up to Pam Bondi, his pick as attorney general. "I want her to do what she wants to do," he said. Such threats, regardless of Trump's inconsistencies, have been taken seriously enough by many top Democrats that Biden is considering issuing blanket, preemptive pardons to protect key members of his outgoing administration. Trump did seemingly back off his campaign rhetoric calling for Biden to be investigated, saying, "I'm not looking to go back into the past." Swift action on immigration is coming Trump repeatedly mentioned his promises to seal the U.S.-Mexico border and deport millions of people who are in the U.S. illegally through a mass deportation program. "I think you have to do it," he said. He suggested he would try to use executive action to end "birthright" citizenship under which people born in the U.S. are considered citizens — although such protections are spelled out in the Constitution. Asked specifically about the future for people who were brought into the country illegally as children and have been shielded from deportation in recent years, Trump said, "I want to work something out," indicating he might seek a solution with Congress. But Trump also said he does not "want to be breaking up families" of mixed legal status, "so the only way you don't break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back." Trump commits to NATO, with conditions, and waffles on Putin and Ukraine Long a critic of NATO members for not spending more on their own defense, Trump said he "absolutely" would remain in the alliance "if they pay their bills." Pressed on whether he would withdraw if he were dissatisfied with allies' commitments, Trump said he wants the U.S. treated "fairly" on trade and defense. He waffled on a NATO priority of containing Russia and President Vladimir Putin. Trump suggested Ukraine should prepare for less U.S. aid in its defense against Putin's invasion. "Possibly. Yeah, probably. Sure," Trump said of reducing Ukraine assistance from Washington. Separately, Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire. Asked about Putin, Trump said initially that he has not talked to the Russian leader since Election Day last month, but then hedged: "I haven't spoken to him recently." Trump said when pressed, adding that he did not want to "impede the negotiation." Trump says Powell is safe at the Fed, but not Wray at the FBI The president-elect said he has no intention, at least for now, of asking Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to step down before Powell's term ends in 2028. Trump said during the campaign that presidents should have more say in Fed policy, including interest rates. Trump did not offer any job assurances for FBI Director Christopher Wray, whose term is to end in 2027. Asked about Wray, Trump said: "Well, I mean, it would sort of seem pretty obvious" that if the Senate confirms Kash Patel as his pick for FBI chief, then "he's going to be taking somebody's place, right? Somebody is the man that you're talking about." Trump is absolute about Social Security, not so much on abortion and health insurance Trump promised that the government efficiency effort led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will not threaten Social Security. "We're not touching Social Security, other than we make it more efficient," he said. He added that "we're not raising ages or any of that stuff." He was not so specific about abortion or his long-promised overhaul of the Affordable Care Act. On abortion, Trump continued his inconsistencies and said he would "probably" not move to restrict access to the abortion pills that now account for a majority of pregnancy terminations, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights. But pressed on whether he would commit to that position, Trump replied, "Well, I commit. I mean, are -- things do -- things change. I think they change." Reprising a line from his Sept. 10 debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump again said he had "concepts" of a plan to substitute for the 2010 Affordable Care Act, which he called "lousy health care." He added a promise that any Trump version would maintain insurance protections for Americans with preexisting health conditions. He did not explain how such a design would be different from the status quo or how he could deliver on his desire for "better health care for less money."

The drones were initially spotted near the Raritan river, a waterway which feeds into the Round Valley Reservoir - the largest in New Jersey, the Associated Press reported. The sightings soon spread to other parts of the state, including New Jersey's coast. Some of the flights were spotted near Picatinny Arsenal - a sensitive military research facility - as well as near President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in the town of Bedminster, New Jersey. In nearby New York City, several drones were reported flying over the Bronx on 12 December, a police official told CBS News, US partner. Officers who responded to the incident saw the drones flying overhead, but they disappeared soon afterwards. Drones have also been reported in other parts of the state, according to New York State Police. Police in Connecticut have also confirmed that "suspicious drone activity" has taken place in various parts of the state. A drone detection system has been deployed around the towns of Groton and New London. FBI investigates possible drones seen over Trump golf course In Maryland, former Republican Governor Larry Hogan claimed he saw what appeared to be "dozens" of drones over his residence in Davidsonville, about 25 miles (40km) from Washington DC. "Like many who have observed these drones, I do not know if this increasing activity over our skies is a threat to public safety or national security," he wrote on X. "But the public is growing increasingly concerned and frustrated with the complete lack of transparency and the dismissive attitude of the federal government." In late November, the United States Air Force also confirmed that unidentified drones were spotted over three US airbases in the UK: RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk and RAF Feltwell in Norfolk. UK defence sources told the that suspicion had fallen on a "state actor" being responsible for the incursions. In October, the Wall Street Journal also reported that mysterious drones were seen for 17 days near US military facilities in Virginia. Both federal and state authorities have said that they do not believe the drones are dangerous or pose a threat to US national security. Following a briefing with the Department of Homeland Security on 11 December, New Jersey assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia said the drones appear to avoid detection by traditional methods such as helicopter and radio. Fantasia said the drones are up to 6ft (1.8m) in diameter, travel with lights turned off and "operate in a co-ordinated manner". Her comments stand in stark contrast to the White House, which has suggested that these are "manned aircraft". The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security also said that the majority of sightings appear to be lawful, manned flights. None have been reported in restricted airspace, the statement added. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a statement on Friday saying more and more people are using drones, meaning more people are noticing them in the sky. It added that while drones can be flown in most locations below 400ft (121m), drones can't be flown within controlled airspace around an airport without FAA authorisation; over designated, national security-sensitive facilities; in certain military bases, infrastructure and national landmarks; and in airspace covered by temporary flight restrictions. Where are they coming from? If the objects are confirmed to be drones - which at this point is unconfirmed - it is unclear who might be operating them. Citing anonymous "high sources", New Jersey Republican representative Jeff Van Drew said that they were coming from an Iranian "mothership" in the Atlantic. The Pentagon swiftly dismissed the comment, saying "there is no truth to that". "There is no Iranian ship off the coast of the United States, and there's no so-called mothership launching drones towards the United States," deputy spokesperson Sabrina Singh told reporters. Another lawmaker, Illinois Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi - who is on a congressional committee that looks at China's Communist Party - told media outlet NewsNation that there is a "non-trivial" chance that China could be involved. "It's definitely a possibility and the likelihood that they can then access data that is collected by these drones is very high," he said. The Pentagon and White House have both insisted that there is no foreign origin for the objects. Van Drew and other lawmakers have pushed back on those denials. "Here's the deal: they don't know what it is. They don't know what it's about," Van Drew told Fox News. "They have no idea where it comes from, but they know what it's not about? That's nonsense." In a separate incident across the country, a northern California man was charged on 11 December with flying a drone over and taking pictures of Vandenberg Space Force Base, located near Santa Barbara. The incident is alleged to have taken place on 30 November, according to prosecutors. The man, 39-year-old Chinese national Yinpiao Zhou was arrested just before he boarded a flight to China. He appeared in court on Tuesday and no plea was was taken. There has been no suggestion that the incident is related to the spate of reported drone sightings on the east coast. Can the drones be stopped? Several lawmakers have suggested that the drones should be shot down and analysed to determine their origin and intentions. Among them is President-elect Donald Trump, who took to his Truth Social media platform to suggest that drones couldn't be flying without the government's knowledge. "Let the public know, and now," he wrote. "Otherwise, shoot them down". The US Federal Aviation Administration has also established temporary flight restrictions prohibiting drone flights over Bedminster and Picatinny. In a statement, the FAA also warned that drone operators who conduct unsafe or dangerous operations could face fines of up to $75,000 (£59,000) and have their drone pilot certificates revoked. In a letter to US President Joe Biden published on 13 December, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy urged federal agencies to "work together" to solve the mystery, as well as push Congress to extend counter-drone capabilities to local law enforcement. Some residents have suggested they may take action against the drones themselves - something authorities have strongly warned against doing, as it is illegal. But making sense of confusing terms like ETFs, blockchains and cold wallets that may crop up in conversations with crypto enthusiasts and armchair investors alike can be tricky. Worry not. If you're hearing these for the first time, or just need a refresher, here are a few key words and what they mean. Bitcoin While many may struggle with the finer points of crypto, pretty much everyone has heard of its most famous product: Bitcoin. But what actually is it? Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, which is to say a type of digital currency. Unlike traditional currencies - the dollar or pound, for example - Bitcoin is not controlled by centralised financial institutions. This makes it popular for people who think decentralisation can bring financial freedom, but it also makes it extremely volatile with it rising and falling in value at the whim of Bitcoin buyers and sellers. Its price climbed in value in 2024, particularly in November when Donald Trump won the US Election . On 5 December Bitcoin's price topped $100,000 - a milestone investors have long been hoping it would reach. But Bitcoin's price has been known to plummet just as quickly as it spikes. Seven wild moments from the turbulent story of Bitcoin Bitcoin 'halving' The blockchain, the system that underpins Bitcoin, is sustained by rewarding so-called "miners" - whose job it is to validate transactions - by paying them with the cryptocurrency. However, unlike some other digital currencies, there is not an infinite supply of bitcoins. The amount that can be mined is capped at 21 million, and most are already in circulation. So roughly every four years - or when the Bitcoin blockchain reaches a certain size - the number of bitcoins rewarded to those who successfully validate transactions is cut in half. The most recent Bitcoin "halving" (or "halvening") event took place on 20 April 2024, reducing the reward for miners from 6.25 bitcoins to 3.125. This ensures Bitcoin's supply is drawn out for longer while demand, in theory, goes up over time. But with fewer rewards for miners, it can also lead some to consider whether it is financially worthwhile for them to continue the costly operation of running their powerful computers. Blockchain Blockchain is the technology underpinning all cryptocurrencies, and many related products like non fungible tokens (NFTs). In essence, it is a virtual spreadsheet on which all the buying and selling of crypto is recorded. They are arranged in blocks linked together in a giant chain - hence the name. Every cryptocurrency transaction is individually recorded onto the blockchain by a huge network of volunteers verifying its authenticity by using computer programmes. The incentive to do this for Bitcoin's network is that the first person to validate transactions is rewarded in Bitcoin. This potentially lucrative process, known as mining, is also controversial because of the incredible amount of energy used as people the world over race to be the first to successfully update the blockchain. Crypto Wallet A crypto wallet is a place where investors hold their cryptocurrency. It stores the virtual assets much like a traditional wallet holds cash. There are two types, a hot wallet and a cold wallet. Hot wallets are connected to the internet, and thus more accessible for quick transfers and easy access. Cold wallets are physical devices like specially designed USBs that store crypto offline typically for safer and longer term storage. Ethereum Ethereum is used to describe both the second largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin, represented by the Ether token, and the blockchain underpinning it. This supports an array of different applications and digital assets, such as non-fungible tokens. It functions in a similar way to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, but in 2022 switched to a greener operating system requiring less computers and energy. What are NFTs and why are some worth millions? Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) ETFs are portfolios that let investors bet on multiple assets without having to buy any themselves. Traded on stock exchanges like shares, their value depends on how the overall portfolio performs in real time. They can comprise a combination of gold and silver bullion, for example, or a mix of shares in both technology and insurance companies. A spot Bitcoin ETF buys the cryptocurrency directly, "on the spot", at its current price, throughout the day. While some ETFs already contained Bitcoin indirectly, the US approved several spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024. This allowed new investors, such as investment management firms like Blackrock and Fidelity, to enter the speculative world of Bitcoin without having to worry about digital wallets or navigating crypto exchanges. How big banks are becoming 'Bitcoin whales' Stablecoins "Stable" is the key word here - this cryptocurrency differs from others as it is intends to be less volatile in value. This typically works by the price being linked to an existing asset, for instance currencies like the US dollar or Pound Sterling, which in theory should make them more stable in price than cryptocurrencies that are not backed by assets. Stablecoins themselves are usually controlled by companies that provide them, with transactions recorded on digital ledgers. While held up by some as the future of finance, high profile price collapses of stablecoins have alerted regulators to risks for investors and prompted scrutiny over their supposed stability. Cryptocurrency firm Terraform, behind the crashed TerraUSD and Luna tokens, files for bankruptcy XRP XRP is a cryptocurrency used by a platform called the XRP Ledger. It was created by the co-founders of financial services company Ripple Labs in 2012 as a cheaper, faster alternative to Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency has a fixed supply of 100 billion coins, which were created when it launched. Much of it is held by Ripple and periodically released into circulation. Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, transactions made using XRP are verified through consensus - whereby the majority of validators on its peer-to-peer network must agree whether or not a transaction is valid before it is added to its blockchain. This has been credited with allowing many transactions to take place simultaneously, at high speed and low cost - making it appealing to financial institutions or for processes like cross-border payments. closures in Germany and avoid immediate compulsory redundancies. The two sides have, however, agreed to cut more than 35,000 jobs across the country in a "socially responsible manner" by 2030, in order to save some €15bn (£12.4bn). Germany's largest carmaker had previously warned it might have to shutter plants in the country for the first time in a bid to cut costs. After drawn-out negotiations which began in September, the union said on Friday that the two had "succeeded in finding a solution" that secures jobs and enables future investment VW was considering closing up to three factories in Germany and had been calling on its workforce to accept a 10% pay cut. At the time, the union was calling for a 7% increase. While the deal will also see a reduction in production capacity across its plants, it was celebrated by union leaders. "No site will be closed, no-one will be laid off for operational reasons and our company wage agreement will be secured for the long term," said IG Metall's works council chief Daniela Cavallo. "We have achieved a rock-solid solution under the most difficult economic conditions," she added. The 35,000 job cuts by 2030 are expected to be found through different solutions such as offered early retirement. Under the agreement, a 5% wage increase that was previously agreed will also be suspended in 2025 and 2026. The union said this would help "support transformation" at the company. The number of apprenticeships on offer each year in Germany will be reduced from 1,400 to 600 from 2026 too, and it will look at shifting some production to Mexico. It is also looking at alternative options for its Dresden and Osnabrueck sites. But Oliver Blume, VW's group chief executive, said in a statement that the agreement was "an important signal for the future viability of the Volkswagen brand". Factory closures in Germany would have been unprecedented in the manufacturer's history. VW, along with other German carmakers, has been badly affected by a decline in demand for its cars in China, previously a lucrative market. At the same time, Chinese brands have been moving into Europe, increasing competition for sales. During the talks, some 100,000 workers joined short, so-called "warning strikes" at sites across the country, in order to put pressure on the company's management. The latest round of talks began on Monday, with negotiators apparently determined to get matters settled before Christmas. The German chancellor Olaf Scholz also welcomed the announcement, describing it as a "good, socially acceptable solution".

Although the dimensions of this laser are so small that its structure can only be seen through a powerful microscope, its potential is vast. With applications in early medical diagnostics, data communication, and security technologies, this invention could also become a key tool for the study of light and matter interactions. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), Lithuania researchers and scientists from Japan have developed a unique nanolaser. Although the dimensions of this laser are so small that its structure can only be seen through a powerful microscope, its potential is vast. With applications in early medical diagnostics, data communication, and security technologies, this invention could also become a key tool for the study of light and matter interactions. Depending on the application, lasers differ in the way light is amplified and produced, which determines the colour of the radiation and the quality of the laser beam. "Nanolasers are lasers that use structures a million times smaller than a millimetre to generate and amplify light, and the laser radiation is generated in an extremely tiny volume of material," says Dr Mindaugas Juodėnas, one of the authors of the invention. The laser's operating principle resembles a hall of mirrors Such nanolasers have been researched and developed for some time. However, KTU scientists' version is unique in terms of its manufacturing process. It uses silver nanocubes, which are arranged neatly on a surface and filled with an optically active material. This creates the mechanism needed to amplify light and produce the laser effect. "The silver nanocubes are extremely small, monocrystalline silver particles with excellent optical properties. It is an essential part of the nanolaser we have developed," says Juodėnas, a researcher at the KTU Institute of Materials Science. The nanocubes are synthesised using a unique process invented by KTU partners in Japan, ensuring their precise shape and quality. These nanocubes are then arranged into a two-dimensional structure using the nanoparticle self-assembly process. During this process, the particles naturally arrange themselves from a liquid medium into a pre-patterned template. When the template parameters match the optical properties of the nanocubes, a unique phenomenon called surface lattice resonance is created, allowing efficient light generation in an optically active medium. While conventional lasers use mirrors to produce this phenomenon, the nanolaser invented by the KTU researchers uses a surface with nanoparticles instead. "When the silver nanocubes are arranged in a periodic pattern, light gets trapped between them. In a way, the process reminds a hall of mirrors in an amusement park, but in our case, the mirrors are the nanocubes and the visitor of the park is light," explains Juodėnas.This "trapped" light accumulates until finally the energy threshold for stimulated emission is crossed, producing an intense beam of light with a specific colour and direction. Juodėnas reminds us that the word laser is the acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation , i.e., the above-described process. International funding helped develop the idea By using high-quality, easily produced nanomaterials such as silver nanocubes, the laser requires a record-low amount of energy to operate, allowing the lasers to be mass-produced. "Chemically synthesised silver nanocubes can be produced in hundreds of millilitres, while their high quality allows us to use nanoparticle self-assembly technology. Even if their arrangement is not perfect, their properties make up for it," says Juodėnas. However, at the initial stages the simplicity of the method which should have attracted the interest, instead put Lithuanian research funding agencies off. "Sceptics questioned whether the simple method we were using would be able to create structures of high enough quality for a working nanolaser," recalls professor Sigitas Tamulevičius. Strongly believing in the quality of the nanolaser they were developing, the KTU Materials Science Institute team received funding from an international organisation, which, as Juodėnas says, assessed the idea as promising: "After a lot of work and a number of experiments, we have proved that even imperfect arrays can be effective if high-quality nanoparticles are used."
